About Silver Bugget Racing
What started it all

Needing to buy my first car I decided to by a 1967 stock bug in 1985. This was the only car I could afford and figure out on my own how to fix. Tricking the car out with some bolt on chrome (thinking I was the coolest) allowed me to meet and join up with Locals Only VW's in Orange County California. This began my journey in the VW community and allowed to meet some of my closest friends that I still hang out with today. The shows and races in the 80's were some of the most memorable events in my life and I wanted ot rekindle those memories. So as a group we decided that building a new race car would allow us to hang out more and create some new memories together. Margo said "yes" and the projects began.

Former VW club members Rich Grise (President) & Shawn Bergerson of So Cal VW"s and Lance Gregory (me) of Locals Only VW's decided to join our two clubs together with aprox. 45 members and create Der Neue Aufstrag (The New Order) in 1987. As the years went on we got out of the VW scene and went on to minitrucks but never lost our love for the VW's. In 2001 I bought a 1965 stock bug to restore and sparked the interest of the other guys to soon get another car themselves, with the approval of Margo (Richies wife).  So I took on the venture and before I knew it I had five VW's in the garage (What happened?). The guys came over and we saw an advertisment in Hot VW's for a Karman Ghia race car for sale "Bad Attitude" formerly in the 80's known as "Bad Karma", so I went to Arizona and bought it and started racing it with the help and encouragement of many friends. After an unsuccessful season of recreating the car's mechanical issues I got frustrated and decided to sell the car to Joel Mohr (Mohr Perfomance) and build a bug that would not only be show worthy  butcompetitive in the PRA.  So, I found a nice donor car, former PRA car ran by Jeff Richards, and tore it apart and made it my own. Seeking the help of friends and industry leaders ie..Ron Lummus at RLR (chassis), John at Topline (engine) Sam at Rancho Performance (tranny)and Lenny Copp and West Coast Classics Restoration (paint and body), allowed me to build one mean machine in a record time of 3 months to participate at the Bug-In 32 in Fontana, CA in April 2005. Soon after Rich  bought a 1965 sedan, that was ran in the NASA circuit in Northern, CA and Shawn purchased his car thereafter, also from Northern, CA from former PRA Super Comp Champion Nick Wharton. We support each other and are there to assist each other with repairs and maintenance, and on occasions get a chance to race each other.

In 2006 during our racing season Silver Bugget Racing befreinded Steve Atkinson and his charming family. After a season of hanging out with them we as a team decided to ask Steve to join our team and tight family of friends.

In our 2007 Season we welcomed our 5th member to our racing family. Jon Schweers and his family are a delight to be around and share the values, morals and goals as the rest of Silver Bugget Racing. I have no doubt that these friendships are life long.
